As we move away from active life, the risk of contracting non-communicable diseases gradually increases. That is, inactivity has become a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases. To understand how problematic this has become, it is enough to look at the number of deaths due to non-communicable diseases in Sri Lankan hospitals per year. The following are the number of hospital deaths per year due to several non-communicable diseases.
- Heart Disease: 14.8%
- Cancer: 11.7%
- Paralysis: 8.4%
- Diabetes: 1.6%
- High blood pressure: 1.5%
Of these five noncommunicable diseases alone, the number of hospital deaths per year is 38% of the total. The main reason for this is that we do not lead a healthy life. Of these, laziness has become a major risk factor.
Most people are tempted to use taxis to travel even a mile or two. We are not tempted to walk even small distances. The amount of time we spend in front of the TV and computer per day has become hours. To this end, mega teledrama and foreign teledrama culture have greatly influenced. In the past, a teledrama aired only once a week. So, we were able to spend less time in front of the TV. But nowadays, a number of local and foreign mega teledramas are aired daily on TV channels every few hours at night. It has caused many of us to spend time lazily in front of the TV.
From generation to generation, the gradual decrease in the amount of land we have inherited is also one of the reasons for laziness. In the past, one family had acres of land and mud, but in today's society most families have only a few perches of land. Therefore, our ability to work in the garden and become active is diminished. Also, the mortar and pestle and mortar, chili stone and fork that should have been used for physical use have disappeared from the present kitchen. Instead, appliances have invaded our kitchen. Also, with washing machines, the space for hand washing has been reduced. As water simplifies our lives by using water motors, plumbing, taps, etc., we have gradually eliminated the need to fetch water from the well and to take a shower. If there is an elevator somewhere, we rarely use the stairs.
As a result of laziness, non-communicable diseases such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are on the rise. Laziness also contributes to an increase in obesity and other disorders such as arthritis . So, how do you get rid of this laziness and stay healthy?
If possible, choose hiking to cover a short distance, such as two miles [2 km]. Always use the stairs instead of the elevator. If possible, get off the bus and walk 2-3 minutes before the bus stop to your destination. You can also engage in moderate-intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking, slow running, cycling, and swimming, at least 5 days a week or at least 30 minutes a day. Here, exercising with other family members, neighbors, or friends can be fun. Whenever possible you should have all four of these components in place for launch to maximize profits. We can also make our lives more active by minimizing the amount of time we spend watching TV shows in front of us. Minimize time spent in front of computers. Make room in your kitchen for mortar and pestle, mortar and pestle.
